Safe and Free

Safe and Free

Life isn't always the haven
We would like it to be.
So often, so much of it
Seems cruel and unjust.

Even nature has its rules
Which necessitate survival
Still can seem cruel and unjust
To those in the food chain.

A singular chance brings
This story to my doorstep:

A cat, once and always a predator,
Doesn't see the rights and wrongs,
Only the temptation and thrill
Of catching these small creatures.

But his pride and excitement
Turns bitterly to disappointment
As I catch the tiny creature
And release it from his claws.
