Heal the Planet

Healing our Home

Doesn’t it all boil down to the same thing?

I do what I can to help the Earth. I probably don’t do enough. In fact, I’m almost sure I don’t do enough, but just a little bit, even refraining from that one piece of litter, is one less thing that can harm Her. In this case, as in many cases, it IS the little things that count.

I found it interesting that some people have seen the Earth’s aura. I have not tried, as yet, since I just recently read about it in Llewellyn’s 2002 Magical Almanac. On Page 144, Mary Magpie writes about how she has seen the Earth’s aura and describes how anyone will be able to do as she has done. She says that the best way is to look toward a hill during the daylight hours, but make certain that the sun is not within range of your vision. “Don’t focus directly on the outline of the hill, but on something actually on the skyline – a tree or hiker.” Then she says to allow your eyes to relax and become unfocused, rather like daydreaming. After a time, you will be able to see light radiating from the hill. This, she says is the aura.

Mary also says that she would like to hear from people, describing their experience witnessing the Earth’s Aura. Write to her at

I wonder if this aura changes, I wonder if it shows health or illness. I wonder if people have seen it and realized that our Mother, Earth, is sick and in need of special help. How would it feel, to know that one’s own children were causing such an illness… The thoughts are scary and depressing.. Her children are turning away from her, in her time of need, but I think it is because they don’t know any better. I think that something needs to awaken these children of Earth so that they can become aware of the pain, sickness and perhaps even eventual death that they may be causing of our Home and our Mother.

Scott Cunningham talks about our connection to Earth in his book, Earth Power. “In our increasingly mechanized age, many people are finding themselves isolated from the planet that sustains and supports our very lives. Forgotten is the very real dependency we have on the Earth. Many are severing their ‘natural’ connections with the Earth. As a result, a time of great turmoil exists today on an individual and global level.”

Cunningham goes on to say “The goal of all magic, occult paths and mystical religions is the perfection of self. While this my not be accomplished in one lifetime, bettering ourselves is easily within our grasp. With this singular act, the Earth becomes that much healthier.”

He continues by saying that if we practice any magic that is good and for good, “whether drawing a heart in the sand, gazing into a mirror for a glimpse of the future, or tying a knot to help a troubled friend.” All the while keeping in mind the higher aspects of what you are doing, “You are improving the world and helping to heal it of the terrible ravages it has suffered at our hands. It is this which makes the practitioner of natural magic truly divine.”

I think that it is important to try and heal our home. I truly believe, as Cunningham says, that any positive powers that we work, all the good deeds that we do, all the lives that we touch in noble ways, unreservedly help our home and our Mother Earth. And just the thoughts and processes of picking up that trash, or buying recycled materials, that does the Earth good as well.

I truly believe that we can help the Earth not only by taking care of it physically, but I think that the well being of ourselves, and our home is greatly improved and energized by the simple good deeds, positive energies, and sometimes just a simple smile that helps us just get through one day to the next.

Yasmine Galenorn has a few Earth Healing rituals and ideas in her book, Embracing the Moon. She seems to lean towards the coven or large group rituals. I, (as I often seem to have to do) have tried to modify it for a solitary ritual, which is my preference. Although, when it comes to something like a specific Earth Healing spell, I would gladly participate in a group ritual.

Anyway, here is, briefly, a possible Earth Healing ritual.

Begin as you would, any ritual you perform. Preferably outdoors, but, *I* for one know how impossible that can be. Once you have created your circle of power, speak to the Lord and Lady (or to whom you normally honor).

Lord and Lady, I ask thee to watch over this land, to protect it from harm and from overdevelopment. I ask only that the trees remain standing tall and the waters continue to flow clean and free.

Raise your hands, perhaps with a token of power within them, high high above your head and proclaim

Protect this land from all that harms
Let everyone realize with alarm
that machines that rip and destroy our land
will not be stopped without a helping hand.
From the mountains, to the oceans, the deserts and the vales
Let it be known that the God and Goddess walk these trails.
Should any tear the land asunder
Let lightning flash, with crash of thunder
Stop the destruction as it does roam
and prevent the damage of our home.
By Wind and Flame, by Earth and Sea
These elements combined, so Mote it Be!!!

Blessed Be!
